Slimline Unvented Hot Water Cylinders

McDonald Engineers has designed and manufactured a slimline unvented hot water cylinder which has increased capacity from 120litres to 150litres and dramatically reduced the amount of floor space the cylinder required.

The client had recently purchased a bungalow which was approximately 30 years old and included a traditional vented 900 x 450mm cylinder with an electric shower.

This resulted in an unprecedented demand for hotel rooms in the area, many from wealthy visitors, determined to make their pilgrimage to the Home of Golf.

This presented a major opportunity for one boutique hotel with a booking agent looking to take over the entire hotel for the duration of the tournament.

The nature of the Passivhaus approach and its use of renewable energy sources means that the hot water system can often use more energy than the heating of the building.

Potential Health Threats of Stored Water Demonstrated

After several high profile incidents involving legionella and stored water, McDonald Engineers embarked upon a small scale project to understand the impact of copper’s unique bacteria killing properties.

The experiment was simple. We filled 2 clear glasses with water and placed a section of foam material in each glass. We then placed a 7cm x 4cm piece of copper in one of the glasses, then sat back and waited for the magic to happen.

After only 2 weeks, bacteria could clearly be seen in one of the glasses, whereas the glass with the copper was absolutely clear.

Emergency Calorifier Replacement

McDonald Engineers has saved a local council thousands of pounds by responding to an emergency calorifier replacement for a residential home in the North East of England.

The council were facing the prospect of moving the elderly residents into a hotel until the hot water service had been restored, at considerable cost and disruption to the elderly residents.

Rectangular Thermal Store Demonstrates Full Multi Fuel Capabilities

McDonald Engineers designed and manufactured a 375 litre rectangular thermal store for a private dwelling which incorporates solar thermal, solid fuel, an air source heat pump and an electric immersion to deliver all the hot water needs and supply the underfloor heating.

To ensure the hot water demands of the home were met, McDonald Engineers specified an external plate heat exchanger which acts as the main hot water source with the thermal store being called upon as a backup.

McDonald Engineers has designed, manufactured and supplied a number of horizontal calorifiers for a major UK supermarket ranging from 500 Litre to 1000 Litre Powerflow Commercial calorifiers.

As well as providing a like for like replacement for a calorifier which had failed, McDonald Engineers also manufactured four additional calorifiers for upgrade works at various locations throughout the UK.
