Getting clients into hot water isn’t everyone’s idea of good business, but McDonald Engineers is celebrating its 70th anniversary of doing just that and has worked hard to become one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of high quality hot water cylinders.
Originally incorporated in June 1945, McDonald Engineers is one of few independent manufacturers who remain in the sector.
Now, with a team of 40 employees, the company manufactures and ships its copper hot water cylinders and commercial calorifiers to clients across the UK and beyond, all from its modern 30,000 sq ft premises in Glenrothes.
Over the last 7 decades, McDonald Engineers has enjoyed continued success by investing in the latest technology, however, the original company principles remain - to offer clients top quality, the best service and value for money.
The company has continued to develop its range of innovative and highly efficient products as well as becoming the UK’s leading supplier of bespoke cylinders, whether it’s for one-off projects or custom designed cylinders for large contracts of several thousand.
There is no doubt that much of the company's success is due to its flexible manufacturing process and its highly skilled workforce, which enables it to manufacture a bespoke cylinder in as little as 2 hours and has the quickest industry turnaround for commercial calorifiers.
However, it is McDonald Engineers’ complete focus on providing a superior level of customer service that has seen it develop a highly experienced technical sales team which can assist architects, engineers, specifiers and installers alike.
McDonald Engineers’ Managing Director, Bill Stewart, explained “In our industry, clients expect up to a 25 year guarantee for our products and I am proud to say that we are one of the few companies to have been around long enough to show our warranty means something.”
This durability and quality of a McDonald Engineers’ hot water cylinder was recently demonstrated when it was asked to replace a cylinder it originally manufactured in 1947. It turned out the cylinder was not being replaced due to a failure but simply as part of upgrade to the property and the client looking to take advantage of the latest technology and use a thermal store to give him mains pressure.

And of course, if it were not for our customers and the strong relationships we have with them, we would not have the pleasure of marking our 70th anniversary."
