McDonald Engineers has played a key role in a project, which has enabled a housing association to dramatically reduce energy costs for 91 apartments in a tower block in the North East of England. This has been achieved by replacing the electrical heating system, with McDonald Engineers' CENTRALflow solution.
Working in conjunction with the M&E Consultants and main contractor, McDonald Engineers presented their CENTRALflow solution, which has been designed to combine the benefits of a heat interface unit with an indirect thermal store being fuelled by a central boiler system.
The solution enables the central boiler system to circulate the primary water throughout the building, with the Heat Interface Unit controlling the heat in each apartment and the incorporated bespoke 120 litre rectangular thermal store, providing mains pressure hot water.
Even the supporting frame was manufactured with a recess to accommodate existing pipework, thus reducing any installation issues.
Sales Director, Jamie Stewart, explained “Our CENTRALflow solution has been developed to help local authorities and housing associations reduce energy consumption within their tower blocks, whilst offering tenants significant benefits in terms of mains pressure water and reduced maintenance.”
He continued, “The savings can be enhanced by incorporating renewable energy such as solar thermal, heat pumps and biomass into the central boiler system. However the system can also offer pay as you go metering, or include back up immersion to provide hot water during maintenance or shut down periods.”
