Copper Stills for Distilling Whisky – The Taste Test

Copper Carnish Still

McDonald Engineers were recently called back to an unusual project they completed just over 4 years ago, by a delighted client who wanted to demonstrate just how good the cylinders were performing.

The call out was made all the more pleasurable by the fact that the product in question were not for hot water but rather copper stills for distilling whisky - offering the perfect opportunity to sample an inaugural 3 year old single malt.

McDonald Engineers had manufactured two 2000 litre copper stills for the Abhainn Dearg Distillery on the Isle of Lewis which measured in at 2200mm high and 1050mm wide. In addition to featuring a viewing panel, the cylinders also had various connections and custom designed conical flanges fitted. Managing Director of McDonald Engineers,

Bill Stewart, explained “Whilst the majority of our work is manufacturing hot water cylinders, we are delighted to take on these types of projects where our expertise in manufacturing is challenged.”

He continued, “It was a real pleasure to meet up with the exceptionally hospitable Abhainn team and to be associated with one of Scotland's newest whisky distilleries and the only one in the Outer Hebrides."

And from a quality point of view, Bill added “I can’t recommend their single malt highly enough. It is a lovely dram!”

It should come as no surprise but copper is the magic ingredient in Scotch Whisky... nobody has ever made a successful single malt without using copper equipment!
